WHITEHAVEN FIRE BRIGADE “Fire Prevention and Safety” 16th April

We’ve just had a really interesting presentation by White Watch from Whitehaven Fire Station, they came to talk to us about fire prevention and how we can minimise the risk of harm.
Rachel was the key speaker and along with 3 of her colleagues gave us a run down of potential hazards we can avoid. The U.K. fire service were called out 594,384 times in the last year to deal with road traffic accidents, rescues, wild fires and animal rescues and of course domestic incidents - there were 6 thousand fires caused by electrical faults and Rachel concentrated on this for most of her talk, giving us tips on not overloading sockets, being careful with powering up phones & laptops, keeping doors closed to prevent the spread of fire and lots more. She emphasised the need to maintain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and told us of the installation service the fire station offers (at no cost).
There was a brief look at the danger posed by lithium batteries, a reminder of the ‘what three words’ app which helps identify location when calling 999 for help and a longer than usual question and answer session before the team joined us for coffee, cake and even more questions. The team had brought their fire engine with them and we did remember to send some cake out to the driver who had been sitting patiently in the cab during the session in case of a call out
