ROS DOWNING “A Pictorial journey through Cumbrian History” 22nd January 25

Ros Downing was back with us today to take us through ‘a pictorial journey through Cumbrian history’ and we all learned a great deal about the area we call home. Cumbria was only founded in 1974 but the land of the ‘Cymry’ goes back nearly 4000 years and Ros gave us a whistle stop tour of this remarkable history. Each of the eras she had illustrated with suitable photos and we saw the forts at Maryport, Ambleside, Hardknott and Ravenglass. We had views of the Roman Hadrian’s Wall and the Viking cross at St.Mary’s in Gosforth.
She took us through the Norman invasion to the Industrial Revolution and brought us up to date with the importance of wool, linen, cotton, coal, iron, graphite and steel - a fascinating talk thoroughly enjoyed by the members who joined us.
