MAUREEN MONKHOUSE “Flying visit to Lublin, Poland” 4th March
This week our guest speaker, who had problems with his car and had to cancel his talk at the last minute - fortunately we have a heroine in our U3A and Maureen Monkhouse, who is the Art group leader, stepped up and gave us a fascinating illustrated talk about the town of Lublin in Poland where her brother lived and where she often visited.
It is the 9th largest city in Poland in the Lubelskie region and Maureen was able to bring the place to life with anecdotes of her time there alongside descriptions and photos of what sounds like a really interesting place.
The city’s emblem centres round a goat and grapes and by the end of the talk the audience knew a lot about these and many other interesting facts about the city. She talked about the beautiful countryside but also it’s brutal history during the Nazi occupation and the horrific concentration camps which are still remembered today.
Our Art group are used to Maureen giving really interesting talks about artists and now the main group would like to say Thank You to her for saving the day with her unexpected non-art based talk about Lublin.
