JANE LASKEY “Reimagining Roman Maryport & the Senhouse Museum” 5th February

We’ve had Jane Laskey from the Senhouse Museum at Maryport to talk to us before, but those talks were always about interesting artefacts in the museum …..this time she was telling us about the building itself and their plans for the future.
She explained about the site’s Roman heritage and why the site forms part of the Hadrian’s Wall heritage trail, she told us of the small forts every Roman mile along the wall and the Watchtowers and how the Senhouse museum site sits on a 6 acre site where one of these watchtowers stood. She took us through the building’s history from when it was built by the Senhouse family to today where it operates with 3 permanent staff, over 15 volunteers and has 10,000 visitors each year. Their plans to develop the site are impressive and will allow visitors to view the archaeological site, to view even more of their collection and develop their educational work with the community, hopefully expanding their visitor numbers to 30,000 a year - a really interesting talk.
