ANTHONY PAYNE “The Road to Morocco” 11th June

Anthony gave us an illustrated talk about his recent trip to Morocco. A North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, distinguished by its Berber, Arabian, and European cultural influences. It is a country of dazzling diversity; epic mountains, sweeping deserts and ancient cities.

We saw photographs of the diverse influences in the architecture, demonstrating pre-Islamic Berber, traditions, with Islamic, Andalusian, and even colonial European styles. Key features include geometric patterns, vibrant tile work, ornate arches and the iconic “riad” (a house with an interior courtyard).

A trip through the narrow streets and alleyways of the souks of Marrakech, offered a glimpse into local culture and a wide array of Moroccan goods available, from spices, to leather, carpets and jewelry.

A fascinating talk of a place which Anthony described as “exotic, without the hassle of a long haul flight”.
